Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning August 13, 2020) will explore state-of-the-art approaches to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). The speaker will discuss evidence-based restitutive as well as compensatory treatment approaches and highlight new interventions targeting communication dyads and communication partner training.

Summary: Studies have shown that grammar is foundational to a child’s communication and academic growth. SLPs who work with children with development language disorders (DLD) – regardless of the etiology of the disorder – need effective research-based grammar interventions in their toolbox. The articles in this journal self-study (selected from a Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools forum, “Morphosyntax Assessment and Intervention for Children”) describe evidence-based approaches for grammar assessment and treatment and provide tools to support goal-setting and progress monitoring. The articles discuss new approaches and practical implications for practice.

Summary: Two big challenges in evaluating dual language learners with reading disorders are determining (1) the best testing tools and (2) the language for assessment. This webinar will explore specific components of a reading assessment for English-Spanish bilinguals and share interventions that can facilitate reading across languages. While the course will focus primarily on Spanish and English learners, the speaker will include examples from other languages and the types of reading difficulties that students experience.

Summary: Adults who are deaf or hard or hearing, as well as families of children with hearing conditions, often report that they struggle to understand the results of hearing assessments, make decisions about next steps, and convey the outcomes and implications to others. This course introduces the Ida Institute's new conversation guide, My Hearing Explained, a tool to help hearing care professionals (both audiologists and SLPs specializing in hearing care) present hearing test results in a person-centered way and help patients and their families make decisions that are right for them.

Summary: Dyslexia and developmental language disorders (DLD) – relatively common, language-based disorders that affect children’s reading and academic achievement as well as social and life outcomes – frequently co-occur in the same child. Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning November 18, 2020) will demonstrate how to incorporate cultural and linguistic diversity in an authentic way when teaching basic speech science courses. Speakers will provide examples of teaching activities for speech science, anatomy, and phonetics courses to expand students’ perspectives on foundational science concepts and help them develop an appreciation for the diversity present in speech production. The webinar will address dialects in American English (phonetics), anatomical correlates versus learned behaviors associated with gender differences (anatomy and physiology), and acoustic measures associated with sexual orientation.
