Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. This on demand webinar will focus on the impact of diversity on the supervisory relationship and the importance of cultural competence in clinical supervision. Speakers will examine the influence that language, labeling, stereotyping, and implicit bias have on the supervisor and supervisee, as well as discuss strategies and techniques to improve cultural competencies for supervising SLPs and audiologists. The webinar will review the literature on diversity and cultural competence in supervision; discuss biases, power imbalance, cultural humility, and self-analysis; and include case studies and activities that provide supervisors an opportunity to consider their own cultural identity and ways in which this identity influences their supervisory alliance. This course discusses the challenges of speech-language service provision and supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the needs of clients, supervisees, and clinicians themselves. The pandemic has created many professional challenges for SLPs, including the need to quickly adjust to telepractice for service delivery and supervision, emotional stressors and trauma that may exacerbate clients’ communication difficulties, and vicarious traumatization of clinicians themselves. Summary: Two big challenges in evaluating dual language learners with reading disorders are determining (1) the best testing tools and (2) the language for assessment. This webinar will explore specific components of a reading assessment for English-Spanish bilinguals and share interventions that can facilitate reading across languages. While the course will focus primarily on Spanish and English learners, the speaker will include examples from other languages and the types of reading difficulties that students experience.

Summary: This course focuses on emerging research and changing practices in the management of dysphagia as it relates to aspiration pneumonia prevention and oral care. The presenters review the contribution of oral biofilms to bacterial aspiration pneumonia and systemic health, and discuss the genesis and treatments for aspiration pneumonia. The course describes the national VA deployment of a pneumonia prevention initiative and provides practical instruction in the development of an oral care program participants can use to implement a program in their own facility.

Summary: SLPs are charged with doing more with less time. This session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference shares a way to address caseload and time challenges. The workload calculator is a tool that can be used to critically analyze an SLP's caseload. Summary: Behavioral interventions that provide a calibrated mode for strengthening inspiratory and expiratory muscles are limited and often non-evidence-based. This on demand webinar discusses the evidence base for respiratory muscle strength training (RMST) devices and shares the assessment and treatment protocols necessary for valid implementation of respiratory muscle strength training protocols. The course will be useful for SLPs working in health care settings treating acute and chronic conditions that impact the functions of breathing, coughing, swallowing, and vocalizing that result from skeletal muscle weakness.
