Summary: An increasingly diverse United States means that clinicians are encountering more languages in hospital settings. SLPs and audiologists have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure language access—that is, to actively bridge communication challenges between clinicians and patients/families who do not speak, understand, read, or write in the same language. This session discusses language access law and solutions for situations in which a trained medical interpreter is unavailable.

Posting of client-related information, uncivil remarks, misrepresentation of services, and/or defamatory claims—whether intentional or unintentional—may cross the boundaries of ethical and legal behavior. Summary: While the use of telepractice for dysphagia management has increased considerably due to restrictions on in-person practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges still exist. This session discusses the remaining barriers to the adoption of telehealth for dysphagia services and ways to overcome them. The speaker explains an evaluation and decision-making process clinicians can use to determine if the adoption of telepractice for dysphagia care is right for them and discusses ways to advocate for and start developing telepractice models of care in a variety of health care settings.
